[...] "Thesaurus" by Erricos Stephanou was a milestone in Greek lexicography and had multiple editions, despite its disadvantages, such as the inclusion of passages from ancient authors without precise references - just a simple mention of the author's name or the title of their work - and the etymological, rather than alphabetical, arrangement of entries.
However, these aforementioned disadvantages cannot diminish the great value of the work and its contribution to Greek lexicography, considering the number of entries - more than one hundred thousand - many of which were collected for the first time. This becomes even more understandable when we take into account that at the time "Thesaurus" was compiled, an original monumental work, there were no standardized editions of ancient authors. This meant that Erricos Stephanou gathered the fragments of his "Thesaurus" from a few printed sources and many manuscripts, traveling to all the major cities of Europe and pleading with princes and rulers for financial support, as the cost of the work was very high and it cost him his entire fortune.
