Description
The Synasos, like most Greek Orthodox local communities in Asia Minor, had no history but only customs and traditions. The author relies on the significant community archives of Synasos, the Ottoman state archives, the press, and private archives to unfold in the pages of the book the life and activities of the inhabitants of a Greek-speaking community whose earliest references date back to the 13th century. The history of Synasos from the 18th century combines the local with the scale of the Empire, agricultural production with the guilds of the City, Ottoman reality with the influence of Greek nationalism. The natural environment, gender relations, inheritance, and taxation were the factors that contributed to the stability of the local society, with the gerontocracy ensuring the perpetuation of balances and the reproduction of the system. Economic activities in the City, along with education, were the factors that brought movement to the local society. A movement that can be read in the evolution of the landscape and domestic architecture, in migration and the ideological reorientations of the inhabitants. The book proposes answers and highlights the questions that remain open regarding the relations between the local communities of Asia Minor and the major formations in the Ottoman Empire, as well as in the competitive nation-building processes during the 19th century. The final chapter presents the course of social integration of the Synasos refugees after the Exchange of 1924 and analyzes the process of integrating their past into the dominant framework of Greek history through an ethnographic approach outside of place and time.
