Description
This study aims to present a different perspective on the events that took place in Thessaloniki and the wider Macedonian region during 1916-1920, from the viewpoint of the Greeks of Cyprus. The "Macedonian Transport Corps" of the British army provided an opportunity for at least 12,000 Cypriots, mostly Greeks, as well as a few hundred Turks, to be stationed in Macedonia as laborers. Their main motivation was the high daily wage, but some also joined to "experience the world" or to "fight for their Macedonian brothers," as the colonial authorities' propaganda posters claimed. At the same time, volunteers from Cyprus fought in Macedonia as part of the "National Defense" army and later the Greek army. This edition provides a concise overview of the contribution and losses of Cyprus in the Macedonian Front, and includes the impressions of the volunteers from the island based on their military experience in Macedonia. Special chapters document the impact of the Thessaloniki fire of 1917 in Cyprus, the subsequent relief efforts, and the overall presence of Cyprus in the 1910s in the capital of Macedonia: teachers, administrative officials, merchants, and especially former soldiers who formed the small "Cypriot community" in Thessaloniki in the early years after its liberation. By the end of 1919, they managed to establish their first Association before the city underwent significant demographic changes in the aftermath of the new war and the subsequent destruction.
