Seville, in the heart of the 18th century. Young Ethelvino de la Sota becomes furious when his hopes of inheriting his uncle's fortune prove futile. There are no longer any estates or money. The only possession left to him is a house filled with letters exchanged between supposed wise men and religious figures. Things take an unexpected turn when each person, for their own reasons, seeks to declare a morally dubious bishop a saint.
