It is knowledge that connects the process of design, shaping, technical expertise, construction logic, properties, and behavior of materials, implementation of the project. The presentation of materials in all possible structural and decorative uses would risk being considered incomplete, as the evolution is rapid and the products of research in the field of materials science and construction are constantly enriched, as well as the modification of the design process in new digital environments.

The first edition of this book was published in 2005. This edition is updated and enriched. It is addressed to all students and professionals who are involved in any way with space or object design. It presents the main groups of structural and decorative materials, which constitute the reservoir from which they can draw the materials they will use in their constructions. The main goal is to develop approaches to the process of material selection in relation to their properties, behavior, strength, processing, relevance, and durability, in relation to the influence of external factors and requirements that affect the design, implementation, and duration of the project.

The way in which the designer chooses the appropriate materials for each case, in order to express his aesthetic perception and aspirations, highlights the value of the matter in the realization of his work. Along this path, understanding the basic characteristics of materials is a substantial achievement at least at a theoretical level and the first step towards their accurate selection. Their correct application thereafter is nothing but the product of experience and continuous updating.
