Description

In this book, we follow the course of the Jews from the beginning of their history until the uprising of the Maccabees during the last pre-Christian times. The author vividly brings to life the highly adventurous "mythical history" of the Jews in his familiar and unparalleled way. Believing that "no myth is a fairy tale," but simply a "pre-scientific way of thinking," and that "the history of every nation begins with its mythology, and national mythology is like an introduction to national history," he highlights the logic and traces of truth that biblical myths incorporate. He seeks not the "truth of biblical events," as the Bible tells "truths of a different kind, of a metaphysical order," but the "truth of common sense."
The author, fully aware that in very few other nations the mythical and the historical are so intertwined, aims and succeeds in highlighting with vigor the mythical-historical dimensions of the timeless journey of the Jewish people. Furthermore, based on the mythologized and narrated events throughout the book, continuous references are made to the current Greek and international reality, where various issues of our time are analyzed with knowledge, humor, and iconoclastic disposition, and many poorly written texts of religious and political-ideological matters are criticized.
