George Kotzioulas is a born storyteller. He builds his stories "with stone and lime", with the simplest materials, and invites us to participate in them, as equals, heroes like himself, like his other heroes. Poor people of the people, in the Epirus Jumerts, in the popular and refugee settlements of Athens, in the sanatoriums and poor neighborhoods of Parnitha and Penteli, are his favorite characters. Their sorrows and torments, joys and sorrows, innocence and cunning, jokes and pranks are his subjects. Love and understanding, human warmth permeate his every word. He lives, observes and records, to convey them to us later quietly, conversationally, inviting us to sit beside him and share his emotions, feelings, and anxieties.
Kotzioulas wins you over from his first lines, with simplicity, sincerity, unaffected politeness, humanity, and ethics. He doesn't try to impress you, to show off his skills and technique. You feel that he is one of us, inspired by us and writing for us. And in this, his language plays a big role, simple but so vivid and natural, it knows how to draw from the best moments of our literary tradition.
Realism and lyricism harmoniously coexist and support each other in his texts. They coexist and support each other to give us images of authentic life.
This volume comes to complete and complement the image of George Kotzioulas' prose work after the second volume of his "Collected Works" and "Bitter Life and Other Prose Writings", which were recently published and republished. It includes all the rest of his prose, most of which had remained unpublished in the author's archive. We follow in them the course of the storyteller from his first published text in 1929 until his last in 1953. Thus, we have the opportunity to get to know a very valuable creator who, for reasons unrelated to the literary value of his work, remained on the sidelines for many years. Above all, however, we have the opportunity to enjoy genuine literature.
