"Between modern and postmodern, many, many things have changed. First of all, the relations of production have changed, because the labor force has transformed. Secondly, triumphing over socialist opponents and competitors, the capitalist regime has become totalitarian and, of course, more ruthless. For one reason only: it no longer obliges only its factories to produce, but forces the whole society to work for its wealth? it no longer exploits only the workers, but all the citizens...
And then how can a revolutionary subjectivity be formed within the multitude of producers? How can this multitude decide to resist and revolt? How can it develop a strategy of reappropriation? To conduct a struggle for its self-determination? In the biopolitical postmodern, in this phase of transformation and productive enrichment of the labor force, but - on the other hand - also of capitalist exploitation of the whole society, we therefore pose these questions. As for the answer, I certainly do not have it. But perhaps I have contributed a little to the reconstruction of hope".
A.N.
Is there still room for resistance in a society fully integrated into capitalism? The question has never been more critical and its answer undoubtedly passes through the insightful and passionate approach of Antonio Negri.
Negri wrote the two essays that make up this volume in the prisons where he was incarcerated during two different periods of his life, with charges of organizing and revolting against the state and involvement in far-left groups and political assassinations. Although the texts are two decades apart, they are permeated by the same questions about the philosophy of time and revolution. The first one touches on the fault lines that bring capitalist society into constant crisis. The second, written immediately after Empire, Negri's global success with Michael Hardt, develops the two key concepts of empire and multitude.
