[...] After the end of World War I (1918), Turkey was among the defeated (having allied with Germany). This gave the opportunity to the alliance of the victorious powers (England, France, Greece, Italy, Russia) to gain control of Asia Minor as loot. The Alliance broke up, and each of the Powers acted in its own interests in Asia Minor. Italy was the first to land troops in the region with the aim of occupying it.
The Prime Minister of England, Lloyd George, convinced Clemenceau (France) and Wilson (USA) to use the Greek army to contain the Italians. Greece accepted, seeing in this operation an opportunity to fulfill the dream of the people, the Great Idea.
In the presentations of Sir Michael Llewelyn Smith and other distinguished scientists published herein, the history of the movements of foreign powers in Asia Minor and their influence on our army's tragic defeat is exposed. [...]
