Description

In this book, Aristides Hatzis offers an anthology of applied liberalism, with texts that delve into contemporary issues such as hate speech, freedom of the press, euthanasia, same-sex marriage, multiculturalism and the rights of immigrants, political violence, populism, and of course the economic organization of modern liberal democracies.

Following "Liberalism", his successful introductory book on the philosophy of freedom (published in the Small Introductions series), the texts included in this volume cover more specific topics such as liberal democracy, the rule of law, individual rights (with an emphasis on freedom of speech, expression, and the press, academic freedom, rights related to the control of our bodies, the rights of same-sex couples, immigrants, and vulnerable groups).

One chapter is dedicated to economic freedom, which is treated not only as a right but primarily as a necessary condition for prosperity, with particular emphasis on the effective institutional framework that must accompany it to ensure economic development.

The author also dedicates a chapter to the phenomenon of political violence, while the last chapter of the volume is devoted to the ideas, concepts, and issues that concern contemporary liberalism as well as democratic thought as a whole.

The collection consists of articles that have been published, mainly in recent years. The author has thoroughly revised them, adding extensive documentation for those who wish to delve deeper into the individual issues.
