Description
Shortly before Diocletian (284-305 AD) was declared Roman emperor, George was born (probably in 280). He came from a wealthy and noble family of Cappadocia, residing in Armenia. From his father Gerontius, who was a senator and a general, he inherited a love for the military art - which he pursued - while from his pious mother Polychronia, he was taught "from infancy" to firmly believe in God and to practice virtue, having as a model the Lord, the saints, and the martyrs.
When he reached the appropriate age, George enlisted in the Roman army. His character, nobility, and kindness made him immediately beloved among officers and soldiers. And not only them.
In the year 297, when the Romans attacked Narseh, king of Persia, George particularly distinguished himself for his heroism and bravery, resulting in being honored with the rank of tribune. The victories he achieved on the battlefield impressed Emperor Diocletian, who appointed George as a commander, with the title of count, in the imperial guard regiment, at the age of just 18!
Meanwhile, by the grace of God, who heard the prayers of George and his mother Polychronia, Gerontius, who was still a pagan, embraced the Christian faith, was baptized, and soon departed from this world. Son and mother continued their Christ-like life. They practiced prayer and charity. They distributed part of their wealth to the "least brothers" of Christ, regardless of whether they were Christians or pagans.
In the year 302, Caesar Galerius attacked the Persians again. George once again emerged as the bravest and most valuable officer, without ceasing to be a humble and faithful Christian.
In the same year, Diocletian, by his decree, declared a terrible persecution against Christians. His order was clear: "Those Christians who deny and renounce their faith in Christ will enjoy royal gifts and honors. Those who do not comply will pay with their lives."
