Description
"Medea's Love" is a tragedy within the epic "Argonautica" by Apollonius of Rhodes, from the 3rd century BC, with the key phrase: "Cruel Love, great affliction, great abomination to mankind" (line 445, Book IV). We simultaneously witness the trials of the Argonauts, scenes with particular theatricality, with the psychological conflicts of Medea, the struggle between her love for Jason (a foreigner) and her obedience to her father-king Aeetes, the sorrow for her shameful escape from her paternal palace and relatives, the uncertainty about the future in unknown lands through the river Danube with the Argonauts, the anger at the idea of being rejected by Jason, the fear of being taken back to Colchis by her brother Absyrtus. Thus, she is driven to set a trap and commit fratricide, which Jason carries out, in order to cancel the pursuit and escape to Greece.
The modern Greek pentadecasyllabic verse transforms the ancient epic into a captivating read.
