Description

Over time, our assessments, predictions, expectations, and representations have changed, as well as how we name the disorders that appear in developing individuals. Autism has been renamed Autism Spectrum Disorder, in order to capture the range that such a heterogeneous disorder can have. From an incurable disease, it is now considered a manageable disorder. From the 1980s to the present, we have been following with interest the research and meta-analyses that demonstrate that therapeutic interventions and education for children with ASD, based on Applied Behavior Analysis, yield optimal results regardless of the child's level of difficulty. Thus, a significant percentage of children with ASD, if treated with optimal interventions and in a timely manner (if possible, before the age of 3), will overcome the diagnosis and live a completely normal life. This perspective serves as the best antidote to the epidemic increase in the prevalence of ASD, which is now estimated to be the second most commonly occurring developmental disorder. Finally, our assessments of the contribution of parents to the development of children with ASD have also changed dramatically. The role of the family is crucial for therapeutic outcomes. Optimal intervention is inconceivable without the substantial, long-term, and consistent involvement of parents, following systematic and supportive training.
