Muslims who lived within the borders of the first Greek state were either systematically exterminated - especially in the early years of the Revolution - or moved to the Ottoman Empire. Finally, a relatively difficult to detect but not small number of them were baptized and remained in Greece, the "neo-converts". The Muslim communities of Euboea, essentially the two major communities of Chalkida and Karystos, are the only exception, a part of which remained even after 1833, when Euboea was incorporated into the small kingdom. This book examines the community of Chalkida. Apart from the factual interest it presents, as it is almost unknown, it is an important "indicator" for issues such as: how the Greek state treats its former enemy, what fate awaits those who constitute the community, what policies it pursues, what institutional solutions it accepts. Furthermore, how the local population treats it, what importance the Ottoman Empire attributes to it, what strategies the community itself promotes.
