The meaning of the holidays of our Church is given hymnologically with the sequences that have been written to commemorate the various celebrations. The sequences are written in poetic language, usually dense in meaning. However, poetic language is always difficult to understand.
Supplementary for understanding the content of the holidays, there are texts called Synaxaria. They are wonderful texts, almost always in prose, in an ancient language, and recorded in our liturgical books with very small typographical elements after the sixth ode of the morning service with the troparia kontakion and oikos. The synaxaria come from the pen of approved ecclesiastical writers. They are texts that can instruct the people of God about the subject of the holiday they refer to. [...]
The annual holidays of our church are divided into fixed and movable ones, depending on whether the date on which they are celebrated is stable or not.
These holidays, in terms of content, are distinguished as Lordly, Theotokos, and Saints' holidays. We can also include holidays that refer to various events and have a lesser or greater connection to the holidays mentioned above. [...]
The ecclesiastical and theological terms are not easy to understand by the majority of today's Christians. The translation into the vernacular language of these synaxaria was difficult in several points. Of course, we made every possible effort for the accurate rendering of the texts. [...]
