Eight interpretive routes in the vast field of theater are recorded in this volume; eight personal routes in the fertile lands of tragedy and comedy, sometimes more exhaustive and sometimes shorter, which were attempted in the past or in the recent present and which now come - processed and mapped - to be proposed on paper to the reader-companion who would like to follow them, whether he already knows well or completely ignores the surrounding landscape, the conveniences and pitfalls of it.
In this exploration, tragedy and comedy alternate or coexist, just as the tragic and the comic always alternate and coexist in the history of our civilization and theater. This essential complementarity and continuous shifting between the two fundamental theatrical genres is attempted to be depicted - acoustically and visually - by the title of this volume, choosing to juxtapose the word "tragedy" instead of the established word "comedy" with the synonymous, equally ancient, albeit unusual word "trygody", which appears sometimes in Aristophanes' comedies.
Studies on tragedy and trygody, therefore, which are arranged here in a rather chronological classification, which starts from the ancient Greek past ("Diseases and cures in ancient Greek tragedy and comedy", "Theban cycle: The topography of a cursed generation", "Recognition in Euripides' Helen and its comic restoration in Aristophanes' Thesmophoriazusae", "From Aristophanes' festivals to Menander's omegyres") to end up in the modern Greek or even global present ("Phaedra's Eros: the resurrection of a very old story", "From Aristophanes to Campanelli: variations and variations of the comic", "The reception of Roman and New Comedy by the new Greek stage", "The survival of par(a)tragedy in modern Greek drama") covering a small part of the field of related research and the different possibilities of interpretive approach to the subjects.
