Description

The island of Karpathos is widely known for its stunning beaches, but also for its rich folk and musical tradition that its inhabitants have preserved for centuries. On the other hand, the history of "Anemoessa," as Homer characterized it in antiquity, seems to concern very few people throughout the ages.

In this short monograph, Karpathian journalist Minas Papageorgiou recounts his years-long search for the figure of Hatzilia Oikonomou, a hero of the Revolution of '21, possibly a friend and representative of the island in the early National Assemblies, whose existence and actions he first learned about in 2010.

Beyond the preserved elements of his biography and in his effort to demonstrate the reasons why he remains in obscurity to this day, the author brings to light unknown aspects of Oikonomou's actions and his radical personality, through pre-revolutionary documents. The content of these documents enriches our knowledge of the relationship between the hero and the then ecclesiastical authority of the place.
