In 1946 and the immediately following years, it was one of the most bitter periods in Greek life. The intellectual movement was evolving in a depressing atmosphere charged with the historical conditions of the time and the socio-political events. Intellectuals sought collective support, through which they could freely express their positions and ideas. At that time, the writers of the legendary Generation of the '30s, along with other independent individuals in Literature, formed the National Society of Greek Writers.

Our Society, in its 70 years of operation, has walked alongside the entire Greek people during the critical and perilous periods of our country's post-war history. Throughout this long period of time, our members have acted with dignity and respect towards everyone. They did not concern themselves with identities and ideological references. Thus, a heavy heritage of quality was created, for which we feel proud but also responsible. This journey was not easy. Over time, members of the Society encountered many obstacles and inexplicable hostility from individuals (even representatives of the State) who did not believe in the independence of the spirit. They did not give up! They continued on the difficult path in the service of the Greek intellectual tradition. With these principles, every new member - regular, honorary, associate, or corresponding - who joined the N.S.G.W., continued the journey in the common perspectives set by the predecessors and followed by the successors.
