Description

"The Janus of Nationalism" was first published in 1993 by the magazine "O Politis", at a time when nationalist fever, with the Macedonian issue at its peak, was rampant.

Today, almost fifteen years later, the issue of recognizing the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (referred to as the "state of Skopje" in nationalist discourse) remains unresolved for the Greek state. Unfortunately, everything that has transpired confirms most, if not all, of the authors' analyses. Because now we can better understand how right they were when, in a gloomy era, contrary to the overwhelmingly dominant opinion, they boldly and soberly stated: "Nationalism pushes Greek foreign policy into dead ends and cultivates fantasies in public opinion that we thought were outdated for many decades.

And today, with even greater certainty, we can reiterate the concluding sentence of the 1993 preface: "The path charted by the dominant mass media and the various nationalist centers is not a one-way street; there can be another policy, one that is peaceful and patriotic."

The texts included are:
- Antonis Liakos, "Balkan Crisis and Nationalism"
- Angelos Elefantis, "From Nationalist Fever to Marginality"
- Antonis Manitakis, "National Discourse: Yesterday - Today"
- Damianos Papadimitropoulos, "The Balkans and Us"
