Description

Never before has the dilemma been so timely: "State and corruption: how do we cut the umbilical cord?". "Transparency International-Greece, Organization against Corruption", invited the most important and specialized Greeks - since the list includes the Prime Minister of Greece, Kostas Karamanlis, and the leader of the main opposition, George Papandreou. After the introduction by Aristomenis Syngros, the people who conversed were divided into five parts:
- "The research of 'Transparency International' on corruption in Greece: commenting on the findings" (speakers: Kostas Bakouris, Babis Papadimitriou, Giannis Mavris, Georgios Papageorgiou, Theodosis Tasios, Spyros Makrydakis, Dimitris Papalexopoulos),
- "On the practical: what needs to change?" (speakers: George Papandreou, Antonis D. Papagiannidis, Prokopis Pavlopoulos, Anna Diamantopoulou, Nikiforos Diamandouros, Stefanos Geroulanos, Spyros Desyllas),
- "Institutions, reforms, and the real cost of Democracy" (speakers: Haridimos Tsoukas, Michalis Kortesis, Chrysanthos Lazaridis, Antonis D. Papagiannidis),
- "Towards an open social alliance against corruption" (speakers: Kostas Bakouris, Huguette Labelle, Kostas A. Karamanlis),
- "Appendix" (presentation: G. Mavris, table: Th. Tasios, graphics: Sp. Makrydakis).

"In 1996, a group of citizens, consisting of politicians, businessmen, judges, military personnel, journalists, lawyers, and doctors, public and private employees, decided to confront corruption. For this reason, we established an association under the title 'Transparency International-Greece', as a member of a broader family that had started just three years earlier from Western Europe as a global Non-Governmental Organization. We are the only NGO with the exclusive aim of combating corruption.
The organization was specifically founded in 1993 by distinguished personalities with global recognition. It consists of more than 100 national chapters that are self-governing and represented at the Annual General Assembly, which is its highest body. The secretariat of the global NGO 'Transparency International' is located in Berlin. 'Transparency International' operates at an institutional level and seeks to promote proposals and initiatives to bring about the necessary reforms that will allow the fight against corruption."

(from the speech of Kostas Bakouris titled "The research of 'Transparency International' opens the discussion")
