The story takes place in the impoverished Greece of the mid-19th century, during a period known as the "Reign of Thieves". The backdrop is explosive: the Anglo-French Occupation, the Crimean War, and the betrayed Greek uprising in Thessaly and Epirus reignite the phenomenon of banditry, which seeks to play a bloody regulatory role in the country's political affairs.

As tension escalates, the largest gangs unite, led by the daring Davéli, the savage Kakarapis, and the strategic Kalabalikis, in order to deliver a strategic blow to their opponents. With the instigation of powerful behind-the-scenes power centers, they proceed to kidnap the children of a prominent economic and political figure.

A young law student decides to participate, along with his father, in the bandit operation for ideological reasons and revenge.
The raid unexpectedly succeeds, and the hostage situation of the politician's children disturbs public opinion, shakes the government, and creates international complications. It is at this point that the power of authority is overwhelmingly manifested, and the developments take a different turn.
