Clare Pooley's Green Notebook!

The ideal book for cozying up on the couch.

Imagine that while you are working, you suddenly find a small green notebook, and because you are curious, you open it.

Inside, there is a sentence that encourages you to write a hidden truth that you barely admit to yourself, and then leave it somewhere for the next person to find.

What do you do? Do you write or not?

This is roughly the premise of the -now well-known book- The Green Notebook, which in a way marked the beginning of feelgood books in Greece.

Everyone tells lies about their lives. But what would happen if you shared the truth?

This is what Julian Jessop wonders, a quirky seventy-nine-year-old painter. He decides to record the truth about his life in a green notebook and leave it at Monica's café on Fulham Road. And as the story unfolds, the notebook, which Julian has named "The Authenticity Experiment," changes the lives of the people who hold it in their hands.
Through this original exchange of secrets, the characters reveal their inner truths and desires, and learn that honesty is not as scary as it seems. On the contrary, it can lead to happiness.

A contemporary novel with distinct characters, emotion and humor, the scent of London and a strong cinematic atmosphere.

Julian decides to record the truth about his life in a green notebook and leave it at Monica's café. So our story begins, as this particular notebook will pass through six different people, making them admit and realize truths they were previously unaware of.

The protagonists are as follows:

  • Monica, who is completely independent but fears she will never become a mother

  • Hazard, the life of the party who has addiction problems

  • Julian, the famous painter who feels terribly lonely

  • Alice, who is an influencer but struggles with motherhood

  • Riley, the sweet Australian who loses his authenticity

  • Lizzy, the well-meaning volunteer who enjoys snooping around

This authenticity experiment will bring these people closer together, changing their lives in ways none of them expected.

They will realize that their deepest secrets were not as terrifying as they thought, and that it is a big mistake to judge someone when you don't know them. Often, people are not what they seem and they often pleasantly surprise us.

This book came into my hands at the most appropriate time as I was looking for something relaxing to read. I must admit that I didn't expect to like it so much, but I was truly captivated by the plot and the warmth conveyed by the characters. It was a very sweet read that flowed effortlessly without becoming tiresome. I could say that the characters were realistic, as many times we see someone who appears "perfect" and happy, but in reality, we don't know what they are going through. Personally, it made me think about many things and I would definitely recommend it!

The story is not at all tiring, and the book has relatively short chapters, divided according to who is narrating, giving us the opportunity to see different perspectives.

Also, I loved the overall atmosphere it conveyed, the winter cold, the warm coffee, and the distinct personalities of the characters that ultimately blended beautifully together.

I'm pretty sure that the author is a fan of the FRIENDS series, as the book gives off similar vibes (which is very positive for me since I love the series!).

So if you are looking for a sweet, original, and warm book, The Green Notebook is the best choice. Just make your favorite drink, get comfortable on the couch with a blanket, and leave everything else to the book!
