Did You Know?
Now that you've found the essentials for your next trip on the Hogwarts Express, let's see which of these you know and which you're seeing for the first time.
Did you know that the Hogwarts Express exists under the name Jacobite Steam Train and makes the exciting 84-mile round trip from Fort William to Mallaig in Western Scotland?
Did you know that J.K. Rowling:
- wrote a large part of the Harry Potter series in Edinburgh's cafes "The Elephant House" and "Nicolsons Cafe"?
- was inspired for some of her characters' names by Greyfriars Cemetery in Edinburgh, with a prime example being the name Tom Riddle, the last descendant of Salazar Slytherin "He Who Must Not Be Named," aka "Dark Lord," aka "Lord Voldemort"?
- was inspired by the curving street West Bow in Edinburgh for the famous Diagon Alley market?
- wrote three companion books to the series, the proceeds of which have been donated to charity? Specifically, the proceeds of Quidditch Through the Ages and Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them go to the charity Comic Relief, and the proceeds of The Tales of Beedle the Bard go to the charity Lumos.
