Did you know that your mattress affects the quality of your sleep and therefore your mood? Finding the right mattress for you is not that simple, as you need to consider many different criteria such as your sleeping position, your weight, whether you share the bed, and even more. The ideal mattress size

Let's start with the most basic. The size of the mattress. The most common length is 2 meters, but if you're wondering how many and what sizes of mattresses are available on the market, the table below will solve any doubt.

#Skroutz tip: Usually, the dimensions of the commercial mattresses you will find on Skroutz are referred to the size of the bed. For example, if your bed is 140x200cm, then you need a mattress that is 140x200cm.

If your mattress or bed is a special order, it is important to know how to measure the dimensions of your bed in order to choose the right mattress. You only need to measure the frame of the bed and only from the inside. However, we recommend calculating your mattress 1-2 cm smaller than what you measure, so that there is no difficulty in making the bed and you can neatly fold your blanket or duvet at the end of the bed.

Types of Mattresses and Their Characteristics

Innerspring

This is generally the most economical and common solution. They are divided into 2 subcategories based on the way the springs are applied.

  • Open Type (Bonnell):

In Bonnell mattresses, the springs are supported by a steel rod and have reinforcement above and below the coils or foam. The firmness of the mattress depends on the thickness and number of support springs. These mattresses, also known as orthopedic mattresses, are ideal if you need a firm and rigid mattress, and another advantage is that you won't have to spend a lot of money. However, the presence of springs makes it quite sensitive to movements and bounces. So if you sleep with someone else, it is very likely that you will feel every movement they make.

  • Closed type (Pocket):

In Pocket the springs are not connected, which is why they are called independent, and they are placed inside fabric pockets, forming rows. They usually have more springs than a bonnell mattress, with a softer and smoother feel. If you want the mattress to react less to your movements and be softer due to better weight distribution, choose it over the regular one.

Without Springs

As technology advances, spring mattresses seem to be surpassed by alternative solutions that offer uniform support to the entire body and reduce pressure. These mattresses are divided into categories based on the material used.

  • Foam Mattress:

Mattresses made of polyurethane foam are quite common and popular, as the feeling of lying on foam is quite unique and relaxing. They differ in density, resistance, and airflow properties (cooler). This category also includes a different material, memory foam.

The Memory Foam mattress was developed by NASA as a cushioning material for greater comfort of astronauts during takeoff. The characteristic of this material is that it takes the shape of the body it receives pressure from, and then returns to its natural form.

Which foam mattress is better for me?

Memory foam provides a sinking and hugging sensation due to the material contouring around our body, while it has minimal to no energy transfer, so our movements are not felt by our partner.

In contrast, regular foam does not provide the same sinking and motion isolation as memory foam, but it is more affordable and retains less heat if you tend to get hot during sleep. It is also less temperature-sensitive, as the warmer the environment, the more flexible the memory foam becomes.

  • Latex:

Close to the feel of foam is a mattress made of latex. There are 2 different types, those made of synthetic (derived from petroleum) and those made of fully natural latex produced from the Rubber Tree. As expected, the latter is considerably more expensive, but it is the most healthy and organic solution. The main difference from memory foam is that it is considerably cooler, but you don't get the hugging sensation that foam provides. Finally, it is the most durable type of mattress as we will see below.

#Skroutz Tip: Do not use an electric blanket on mattresses that contain memory foam or latex, as it may alter the function and performance of these materials.

Pillowtop for comfort and mattress protection

Some mattresses have an additional thin layer on top called a pillowtop, aiming to make them even more comfortable and soft to the touch. It is also claimed that this helps prolong the life of the mattress as it does not have direct contact with the body, reducing wear and tear. The pillowtop can be integrated into the mattress or removable. In the latter case, the outer cover can be removed and washed, and there are various qualities and thicknesses available. Pillowtops can be made of foam (memory or regular) or latex.

Extra Materials

Some of the extra features that a sleeping mattress may have include coconut fibers or the fabric being infused with Aloe Vera. Let's take a look at each feature separately.

  • Coconut: Coconut is a natural material used in mattresses for its exceptional properties. It is durable, breathable, and provides excellent support for the body. Coconut keeps the mattress cool and absorbs moisture, maintaining a healthy sleeping environment. Additionally, it is eco-friendly as it comes from natural sources. By choosing a mattress with coconut, you can enjoy a comfortable and healthy sleep.
  • Aloe Vera: Aloe vera is a plant added to mattresses for its beneficial properties. It has natural antibacterial action, provides soothing effects, and promotes good breathability. By choosing a mattress with aloe vera, you can enjoy healthy and eco-friendly sleep.

Hard or Soft Mattress for Sleep?

While the feeling is completely subjective, there are some general rules you can follow to facilitate your market research.

A hard mattress with great resistance is usually preferable if you sleep on your stomach or back, due to the support it provides to your back and waist. On the other hand, a very soft mattress sinks your back, resulting in it not being straight and all the weight and pressure falling on your waist. The classic spring mattress is a tried and tested choice for the support it provides. It is up to you to choose the type (bonnell or pocket) and resistance.

If, on the other hand, you choose to sleep on your side, then a very hard mattress is not the best solution, as your shoulders and waist will bear all your weight. Prefer something that gives way enough, so that your back is straight and does not hinder breathing, such as a foam mattress (especially memory foam).

Finally, if you are one of those people who change positions 50 times during their sleep, the best solution is natural latex. Since it offers ideal resistance, but at the same time is flexible enough for you to feel comfortable in every position.

Now that you have learned the essentials, you can choose the right mattress for you!
