11 Old-time classic songs for the New Year's table

And while time flows continuously and steadily in the same direction, unexpectedly we will reach the change of the year.

You have decided this year to set the table yourself, and you have thought of everything. You have thought of who to invite, what to wear, what to cook, how to decorate, you have everything ready. But have you thought about what music you and your guests will listen to?

Dear reader, leave it to me, I have prepared for you a top playlist, with old time classic songs, so that you all have a wonderful New Year at home. They will be playing softly and sweetly during the meal, and of course the most important thing - without being annoying.

11 Old-time classic songs for the New Year's table

1. Bing Crosby - Let's Start the New Year Right (1942)

We start this playlist chronologically, and the first song on our list is from the soundtrack of the musical film Holiday Inn. The iconic White Christmas was also recorded on this particular album, and the whole album is a masterpiece. And this particular song is about one thing only: the change of the year.

"How can our love go wrong if
We start the new year right?"

2. Judy Garland - Happy New Year (1957)

Utterly melancholic and lonely, the song by Judy Garland, as she is all alone on New Year's without her love. The song was first played in her 1949 film "The Clock". The rendition by Nat King Cole is also exceptional, I cannot fail to mention it.

"I'll keep that memory locked within my heart
That Happy New Year, you were mine"

3. Ella Fitzgerald - What Are You Doing New Year's Eve? (1960)

Song written in 1947, it was covered by beloved Ella Fitzgerald on her Christmas album titled "Ella Wishes You a Swinging Christmas" in 1960. The whole album is a balm to the ears and soul, and wonderful to listen to during the holiday season.

"Oh, but in case I stand one little chance
Here comes the jackpot question in advance
What are you doing New Year's, New Year's Eve?"

4. Carla Thomas & Otis Redding - New Year's Resolution (1967)

The Carla Thomas along with Otis Redding sing a duet about their love, the mistakes they made in their relationship, and how they will manage to find them in the end this year. Unfortunately, Otis Redding died later the same year the song was recorded.

Oh, let's try it again, just you and me
And, baby, let's see how happy, honey, that we can be
And call it a New Year's resolution, yeah

5. The Zombies - This Will Be Our Year (1968)

Recorded with the same four-track cassette recorder that was used for the recording of The Beatles' album Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, this particular piece brought them faith, as the producer mixed the entire album in Mono, and the CBS label wanted it in Stereo for mastering.

The song tells the story of the love they feel for their other half, and how this year will finally be theirs. How romantic!

"This will be our year
Took a long time to come"

6. Carpenters - Merry Christmas Darling (1970)

Although the first (of many) recordings were made in 1970, the lyrics of the song date back to 1946. A lovesick 20-year-old wrote them and 20 years later, when he became a music teacher, his two favorite students (Karen and Richard Carpenter) asked him for a song to sing during the holidays. And with joy, he gave it to them, telling them that only the music needs improvement. Within 15 minutes, Richard Carpenter wrote the music, and of course, success followed.

"I've just one wish on this Christmas Eve
I wish I were with you"

7. Eagles - Funky New Year (1978)

One of the two Christmas songs that the Eagles have sung, there's not much to say about this one. Essentially, it talks about a wild party after New Year's, where one wakes up and has lost the Easter eggs and bunnies.

"Funky New Year
What year is this anyway?"

8. ABBA - Happy New Year (1980)

Abba wishes us a Happy New Year in two languages, as it has been recorded in Spanish as well. With slightly macabre lyrics, it tries to tell us to be better people for the new year and not give up. Otherwise, it's a no-go.

"Happy new year, happy new year
May we all have our hopes, our will to try
If we don't we might as well lay down and die"

9. Barry Manilow - We Wish You A Merry Christmas/It's Just Another New Year's Eve (1990)

Mr. Barry Manilow wanted to write a song for one of his tours and during the recording of his live album. He wrote it on Monday, orchestrated it on Tuesday, and recorded it on Wednesday. As simple, concise, and straightforward as the meaning of the song, which tells us that New Year's Eve is just another day like the rest. Cryin'.

"It's just another New Year's Eve
Another night like all the rest"

10. Charles Brown - Bringing In A Brand New Year (1994)

You won't find me here, I'll be out and having fun, says in short in the song by beloved Charles Brown. From his Christmas album "Cool Christmas Blues" that won the Grammy the following year, and it's worth putting the whole album to play during the festive days.

"So listen, dear, won't you meet me here
While I'm bringin' in a brand new year"

11. B.B. King - To Someone That I Love (2001)

Recorded from his 39th album with Christmas songs, the entire album is produced by B.B. King himself, in a studio in Louisiana. And in the song, besides the sounds of Lucille, he explains that what he must definitely do during the holidays is to be with all his loved ones.

I've made my resolution
Before the New Year's Eve
I'll be so happy
The way I should've been

Happy holidays! <3
